O'Donoghue, Gregory

(1951-2005)

   Irish poet born in Cork, he studied at University College, Cork. After spending twenty years as a lecturer at Queens University, Kingston, Ontario, Canada, he moved to Lincolnshire, England, in 1980. For the next ten years he worked freight trains between South Derbyshire and King's Cross, Nottingham and Skegness, then moved back to Cork. To mark the Cork Year of Culture in 2005, he translated A Visit to the Clockmaker by Bulgarian poet Kristin Dimitrova (1963). He co-facilitated the Thursday workshops of the Munster Literature Centre with Patrick Galvin (see entry) and was poetry editor of the journal Southword. In 2004 he was a recipient of an artist's bursary from Cork City Council. He died in Cork. His publications: Kicking, 1975. The Permanent Way, 1996. Making Tracks, 2001.
